BRITISH CANDLEMAKERS’ FEDERATION
MINUTES OF A MEETING held at NEC BIRMINGHAM on WEDNESDAY 10th SEPTEMBER, 2003 1. Attendance and Apologies: Twenty one Members attended representing 16 Companies. Apologies for absence were received from Derek Hudson, Michael Keene and Sarah Young-Jamieson. The Honorary Secretary (Designate), Brigadier R.W. (Roy) Wilde, CBE, was welcomed to his first meeting and the outgoing Secretary, Brigadier Keith Prosser, CBE,MC, was thanked for his work for the Federation and was presented with a silver candle snuffer. 2. Constitution:
(a) It was noted that the Constitution of the Federation had been circulated to all Members for comment. The main concern was the percentage of candles manufactured in the UK required to qualify for full membership of the Federation. (b) It was Agreed that any proposals, i.e. that 50% or more of candles to be manufactured in this country, should be circulated by the Management Committee (i.e. President/Past Presidents), by e-mail for reply by a set date for consideration at the next AGM in May 2004. 3. Membership: (a) The application for membership from: SATRA Technology Centre (Miss Tori Moreno) SATRA House, Rockingham Road, Kettering. NN16 9JH (01536 410000) had been received and agreed and SATRA is now an Associate Member. (b) The application for full membership from Ingrid Lindholm –Banks 4, Calder Court, Altham Business Park, ALTHAM, Lancs, BB5 5YB (01282 777790) was agreed and is awaiting return of the Membership Application form and payment.
-1- (c) AFTERNOTE: Claremont and May have resigned from the Federation because the bulk of their candles are no longer manufactured in this Country. 4. European Federation: (a) The Minutes of recent meetings can be viewed on the Federation website (password for members – bcf abacus) (b) It was reported that the European Candle Quality Association had reached agreement and that work was progressing. It was based largely on the German standards. (c) It was noted that there had been an increase in fees to the European Federation to cover some of this work. 5. North America: (a) The use of lead wicks in candles is now prohibited by the USA Government. (b) Andrew Leach kindly agreed to report back after the meeting in Seattle in mid-September 2003. 6. Safety Standards: (a) It was Agreed that the proposal that the Federation adopt basic standards for candles, including materials not to be used, should be circulated for further consideration. (b) The current safety leaflet should be placed on the website and updated. Likewise the Federation logo including the address, can be downloaded. (c) There was concern at the very high level of imports of wares from outside the EEC and it was suggested that the matter be investigated further and raised with the appropriate Government Department. 7. Any Other Business: The President was thanked for the donation of £235 profit from the Annual Dinner to the Federation. 8. Next Meeting: (a) Informal meeting at NEC Spring Fair on Wednesday 4th February 2004 at 12.30 pm, probably in the Atrium adjacent to Hall 6 (candlemakers’ show area). (b) Dinner and AGM Subject to confirmation, the annual Dinner will be held at the Tallow Chandlers’ Hall on Thursday 20th May 2004 and the AGM on Friday 21st May 2004. _____
